Keeping the Home Clean and Organized

Cleaning as Part of Your Role

Most nanny positions include some household tasks beyond childcare. Keeping the home clean and organized benefits the whole family and creates a healthier environment for the children.

Daily Tasks

Wash up dishes or load the dishwasher after meals

Wipe down kitchen benches and the dining table

Sweep or vacuum high-traffic areas

Put toys and clothes away after use

Empty nappy bins or small rubbish bins

Weekly Tasks

Vacuum all rooms and mop hard floors

Clean bathrooms (sink, toilet, bath/shower)

Change bed linen

Clean the inside of the microwave

Wipe down fridge shelves

Water any indoor plants

Using Cleaning Products Safely

Many cleaning products contain chemicals that can be harmful to children. Always:

Keep children out of the room while cleaning with strong chemicals

Open windows for ventilation

Never mix bleach with other products (especially ammonia) — this creates toxic fumes

Store all cleaning products in locked or high cabinets

Rinse surfaces well with water after cleaning, especially food preparation areas

Child-Safe Cleaning Alternatives

For families who prefer natural products:

White vinegar + water — Great for windows and surfaces

Bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) — Gentle scrub for sinks and toilets

Lemon juice — Natural disinfectant and deodorizer

Castile soap — Safe, plant-based all-purpose cleaner

Organizing Children's Spaces

Teach children to put things away in the same place every time. Use labeled bins for toys, clear containers so children can see what's inside, and low shelving so they can reach their own belongings independently.
